I was cataloging and archiving some years of filming my friends and strangers on mini DV tapes and had a nostalgic feeling about the way I watched them affect the world in front of them. I went through those hours of footage and made a folder of screenshots as references, then collaged some favorites onto a woodblock in pencil to create the design for this print.
I was indecisive about a color scheme, so I ended up doing 3 different combinations. In retrospect, I wonder if I would ever approach the process in the same way again - Part of me thinks that the variety represents exploration of different ideas, but another part of me feels that the choice to make 3 variations was born out of fear for committing to one idea and taking the risk of being decisive. I was proud of the process in learning new techniques - 4 of the layers were carved like a reduction print is normally produced, but I carved a 5th layer from a separate block to add the shadows.
