Printmaking

Printmaking

I was an adult before I knew what printmaking was. In 2019, I was reading a book about John Wesley Powell’s first expeditions down the Colorado River and some of the artists that went down the canyon then, to survey the landscapes but also capture some of the emotion. The book had a center photo chapter insert which included prints made by woodblock engravings to depict the views of the Colorado River. The style of the art was familiar with its vintage and suddenly, something clicked. I realized so many images I assumed to be drawings throughout the years had actually been prints. At that point, I had been wanting to share more original artwork with my friends - most of my drawings were done in sketchbooks, which I kept personal. So, with my realization of printmaking, and a desire to create original art while honoring and complimenting the styles I was developing with drawing, I got a few beginner tools from iMcClains.com to try it out. Now, years into learning about woodblock printmaking, I continue to find joy and excitement from patience the process, especially in carving.
