Drawing
When I was in university, I carried on a childhood habit of doodling in the margins of my notebooks during school, sometimes out of distraction, more often for focus. In my last couple semesters, I started drawing in a little pocket-sized sketchbook instead of amongst my notes, and in March 2018 I brought a small sketchbook on a backpacking trip into The Maze with Evan and started to draw plein-air scenes of the landscapes I’d visit. I’ve kept the habit up since then, to varying levels of commitment, as a practice of visual journaling. I carry a quart-sized Ziploc bag reinforced by brown packaging tape whenever I travel anywhere. Inside of it, I tote a small notebook, a dozen pens and pencils and erasers, and some small page clips for when it’s windy. All of these drawings are plein-air.
